Are black mold spots dangerous for my kids in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I keep finding behind the dresser in their bedroom. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried the AC isn't drying the air enough. What are the real health risks for young children here in Dubai, and should I be calling a professional to test it immediately?

Black mold spots can be a significant health concern for young children, especially in Dubai's humid climate where air conditioning runs year-round. The primary risk isn't from the color itself—many molds are dark—but from the mycotoxins and spores released by certain species, like Stachybotrys chartarum. For children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, exposure commonly leads to persistent coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms.

The high humidity here, particularly during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in areas with poor ventilation, like behind furniture against an exterior wall. Your AC may not be drying the air sufficiently in that localized spot, leading to condensation. The first step is to not disturb the spot, as scrubbing can aerosolize millions of spores. Instead, have a professional inspector take a tape-lift or air sample for lab analysis. This is the only way to identify the species and understand the actual risk level, as not all black-colored mold is the highly toxic variety.

For a child's bedroom, immediate action is advised. While you wait for assessment, improve air circulation in the room and keep the door closed to contain any spores. A professional inspection will determine if this is a surface issue solvable with cleaning or a deeper problem requiring remediation to protect your children's health.
