How to prevent mold in Jumeirah villa closet long-term?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting black spots on leather bags and shoes. It’s been getting worse since the weather turned more humid a couple of months ago, and I’m worried it’s going to ruin more of our stuff. What’s the most effective long-term solution to prevent this mold from coming back, like a specific dehumidifier or treatment for the walls?

The black spots are likely active mold growth, a common issue in Jumeirah villas due to high humidity penetrating external walls. The most effective long-term solution requires addressing both the moisture source and the environment inside the closet.

First, identify and rectify the moisture intrusion. The external wall may have a compromised vapor barrier or insulation, allowing humid air to condense inside the cooler closet space. A professional inspection can pinpoint this through moisture mapping. For immediate control, a small, portable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can help, but it's a temporary measure.

The core solution is to improve air circulation and reduce humidity. Ensure the closet is not over-packed, as tight spaces restrict airflow. Leave a gap between the wall and your belongings. If possible, install a louvered door instead of a solid one to allow the room's conditioned air to circulate. Run a dehumidifier in the bedroom itself to maintain humidity below 60%, which is critical in Dubai's climate.

For the walls, simply wiping with vinegar or a mold-cleaning solution is a surface fix; the mold will return if the wall remains damp. After the moisture issue is resolved, treating the wall with an antimicrobial coating can provide long-term prevention. However, this coating is only effective on a completely dry, clean, and mold-free surface. For a problem this persistent, a professional assessment is recommended to diagnose the wall's condition and ensure the remediation is done to standard, preventing damage to your property and health.
