How to remove mold from closet wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall facing the outside. It’s gotten way worse since last week's humidity. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good here in Dubai, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can handle myself with products from Ace Hardware?

That black mold in your closet is a classic Dubai issue, almost certainly caused by condensation from your AC meeting the warm, humid air that seeps in from outside. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the temperature difference causes water to form inside, creating the perfect food source for mold.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Don't just wipe it—this spreads spores. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover from a hardware store, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the moisture source.

The critical next step is to identify and stop the moisture. This is the "for good" part. The cause is often insufficient insulation in that external wall or a gap allowing humid air in. A professional inspection uses thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location of the condensation and humidity meters to confirm the levels. Without fixing this, the mold will return, often within weeks, especially after humidity spikes.

For a recurring or spreading problem, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can confirm the mold type (which is important for understanding health risks and remediation protocol) and provide a permanent solution, which usually involves sealing the area and improving insulation to break the condensation cycle. In many cases, this is a building envelope issue that the property management may need to address.
