How to permanently remove black mold for child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It's been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub, it just comes back. What's the most effective way to get rid of it for good, and should I be taking them to a doctor?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. The persistent cough in your children is a significant concern, as exposure to mold spores can irritate the respiratory system, especially in young ones.

Scrubbing surface mold is a temporary fix because it doesn't address the root cause: moisture. For a permanent solution, you must identify and stop the moisture source. In many JVC apartments, this is often poor bathroom ventilation or a build-up of condensation. Ensure your exhaust fan is working correctly and run it during and for at least 30 minutes after showers. Wiping down wet walls and tiles after use can also help reduce ambient moisture.

For the existing growth, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover applied and left to sit before scrubbing is more effective than bleach, which often only removes the surface color. However, given the recurrence and your children's symptoms, this is likely beyond a DIY fix. The mold may have spread into the grout or behind silicone seals.

You should consider a professional inspection. An assessor can use a moisture meter to find hidden dampness and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This is crucial for peace of mind regarding your children's health. A doctor's visit is also advisable to rule out other causes and address the respiratory irritation.

Effective remediation involves removing the contaminated materials (like old sealant), treating the area with antimicrobial solutions, and most importantly, rectifying the ventilation or condensation issue to prevent its return.
