Safest way to clean black mold under rug?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's the house. I just pulled back the big rug in our villa's living room and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold underneath, right where it meets the wall. We had that minor leak from the AC condensation pipe about a month ago and I guess it never fully dried out. What's the safest way to clean this up myself without making my family sick?

Stop all activity and get your family out of the room immediately. Close the door and seal the bottom with a towel to prevent spores from spreading into your home's air. Do not attempt to clean this yourself.

The size of the patch ("huge") and its location under a rug, combined with the pre-existing respiratory symptoms in your children, puts this firmly in the category of a professional remediation job. In Dubai's climate, where high indoor humidity from year-round AC use creates perfect conditions for mold, a minor leak like a clogged condensation drain line can lead to major growth inside walls and under flooring. Disturbing it by cleaning will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, potentially making your family's health issues significantly worse.

For a situation of this scale, the only safe approach is containment and removal by trained technicians using HEPA filtration and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination. The underlying material, likely the wall and floor slab, will need proper drying and treatment. Given the symptoms, a post-remediation verification test by an independent lab is also advisable to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to a normal level. Contact a certified mold remediation provider for an assessment.
