How to safely remove mold and protect my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I’ve just found patches of black mold behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We’ve lived in this villa in Jumeirah for years and never had this issue until now after the recent unusual rain. What’s the safest way to clean this ourselves to prevent it from coming back, and should I be taking them to a doctor specific to mold exposure?

The humid weather and recent rain have created ideal conditions for mold growth in Dubai villas, especially on cold walls behind furniture where condensation forms. For your children's persistent cough, a pediatrician visit is advised to rule out other causes and address respiratory irritation, which is a common reaction to mold spores.

For the patch behind the wardrobe, you can clean it safely if the area is small—less than one square meter—and no one has severe asthma or immune issues. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Move the furniture to ventilate the area. Scrub the wall with a mixture of detergent and water; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth. Dry the wall completely with a fan after cleaning. The key is controlling humidity. Keep the AC running to dehumidify, ensure furniture is slightly away from walls to allow air circulation, and consider using a dedicated dehumidifier in that room.

However, visible mold is often just the surface issue. The moisture source must be identified; it could be condensation from the AC, a minor leak exacerbated by the rain, or dampness wicking through the wall. If the mold returns quickly, covers a large area, or is inside the AC unit itself, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and air quality testing is the only way to identify the full extent and achieve a long-term solution.
