Is black mold from AC leak dangerous to remove myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind it in our bedroom, and now I’m seeing these dark black spots spreading out from the corner. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. I’m worried it’s black mold and I’m not sure if I can just scrub it off with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional company to deal with it properly.

That black spotting is a common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. It is very likely a type of mould, and some black moulds can produce allergens and irritants, particularly when disturbed.
For a small, surface-level area (less than one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Bleach is not recommended; it can damage porous surfaces like drywall and doesn't prevent regrowth. The critical factor is fixing the source of the moisture—the AC leak must be repaired by a technician, or the mould will return quickly. However, if the staining is extensive, has penetrated the wall, or if anyone in the home has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the species and assess if the wall cavity is affected, which requires containment and proper remediation techniques to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home. In many cases here, the constant moisture from a leak leads to mould growth inside the wall itself, which isn't a DIY job. |
