Urgent to remove black mold or DIY over weekend?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It's been extra humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading quickly because my allergies have been acting up. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, or can I handle it myself over the weekend?

Any visible mould growth in a Dubai bedroom, especially with allergy symptoms, should be addressed promptly. The high humidity here, combined with condensation from AC units, creates ideal conditions for it to spread behind walls or under flooring.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt DIY. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area, then scrub with a dedicated mould remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Dry it completely with a fan. However, DIY is only for surface-level mould on non-porous materials. If it's on drywall, wood, or has penetrated the surface, cleaning the visible spot often misses the root cause.

Given its location in a closet—a confined space with poor airflow—and your allergy flare-ups, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall cavity for hidden spread, which is common here. The urgency isn't necessarily emergency-level, but delaying could allow it to colonise further.

Proper remediation involves containing the area, removing affected porous materials, and HEPA vacuuming to capture spores, followed by addressing the moisture source—often poor AC drainage or an exterior leak. For verifiable results, the process should include pre- and post-remediation testing to confirm the spore count has returned to normal indoor levels.
