Urgent: Mold in AC with baby sleeping there?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and this morning I finally pulled the filter out and the entire plastic housing behind it is covered in black and green fuzzy mold. I’m in a Jumeirah Village Circle townhouse and my two-year-old sleeps in that room. How urgently do I need to get an AC cleaning company out here, and is this something I should complain to my landlord about immediately?

This is an urgent situation requiring immediate action due to your two-year-old's exposure. Mold in the AC unit, especially with visible growth on the housing, indicates a significant moisture problem. The damp smell is a clear sign that spores are being circulated directly into the bedroom's air, which can cause nasal congestion, coughing, and irritate allergies, particularly in young children.

Contact your landlord today. Under Dubai rental regulations, landlords are responsible for maintaining the functionality of AC systems, and a mold-infested unit is a health hazard that falls under this obligation. Document the mold with clear photos and send them in your written complaint. For your child's immediate safety, stop using that AC unit and relocate their sleep space until it is professionally remediated.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. The growth behind the filter suggests a deeper contamination in the evaporator coils and drip pan, which requires disassembly and specialized antimicrobial treatment by a certified technician. The high humidity and constant condensation in Dubai's AC units create a perfect environment for this issue. A proper remediation should include before-and-after testing to verify the spore count has been returned to a safe level.
