Can I treat mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we never move that heavy furniture. It looks like a bunch of black spots spreading up the wall. What’s the best way to handle this in a villa here, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can treat myself?

Black mould behind furniture is common in Dubai villas due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The wall likely stays cold, creating a damp environment perfect for mould growth.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, scrub the area thoroughly, and let it dry completely. Bleach is not recommended as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Fix the moisture source first—this is critical. Ensure your AC is draining properly and not overcooling that wall. Improve air circulation by moving the wardrobe slightly away from the wall.

Given the symptoms you described and that the mould has been growing unseen for some time, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible spots are often just the surface manifestation; the hyphae (roots) can penetrate deep into porous materials like drywall and plaster. Disturbing it without proper containment can release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially exacerbating your children's coughing.

A reputable inspector will use moisture meters to find the full extent of the problem and can take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This is important for understanding the potential health impact and ensuring the remediation plan is effective. They will also have HEPA filtration equipment to contain spores during removal. For any significant hidden growth, DIY methods are insufficient and can make the situation worse.
