How to remove mold from shower grout in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It's in a corner that doesn't get much sun and the smell is pretty strong. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good here in Dubai's humidity, or should I just call a professional cleaning company?

That black mold in shower grout is extremely common here due to Dubai's high humidity and the condensation from air conditioning. The strong smell indicates active microbial growth.
For a small, surface-level area you've just noticed, start with a strong vinegar solution or a dedicated grout mold cleaner. Apply it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate, then scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. The key is to dry the area completely immediately after. Use a squeegee on the walls after every shower and consider a portable dehumidifier or fan in the bathroom to combat the humidity that allows it to return. If the mold stains persist after scrubbing or if it has a fuzzy texture, it has likely penetrated deep into the porous grout. Surface cleaning won't remove it for good. At that point, the grout may need to be professionally removed and replaced. A persistent, strong musty odor can also signal that moisture and mold may be present behind the tiles, which requires professional assessment and remediation to address the root cause and prevent it from spreading into the wall structure. |
