Should I call a specialist for bathroom ceiling mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but now I’ve just spotted a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It’s been so humid lately that the ventilation fan can’t keep up. Given how quickly this seems to be spreading, is this something I need to call a specialist about immediately, or is it okay to handle myself this weekend?

That black patch at the ceiling joint is a classic sign of persistent humidity, which our Dubai climate exacerbates. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can often manage it yourself. However, given its location on the ceiling and the persistent musty smell, it's highly likely there is more moisture and mould growth within the ceiling cavity or behind the tiles that you cannot see.

Immediate action is to run your bathroom's exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and ceilings to reduce condensation. For DIY, use a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mould cleaner, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the visible area and let it dry completely.

If the musty smell persists after cleaning, the patch returns within a week, or if you notice any discoloration or softening of the ceiling materials (indicating water saturation), you should call a specialist. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the damage inside the ceiling, which is critical for a permanent solution. In many Jumeirah apartments, this kind of hidden moisture is the real issue, not just the surface mould you can see.
