Should I hire an expert for black mold immediately?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It wasn't there during the last cleaning a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have appeared quickly. Given how common AC issues and dampness can be here, is this something I need to get an expert to look at immediately this week, or is it okay to handle myself with cleaning over the weekend?

Black mold appearing suddenly on an interior wall is a definite red flag, especially with our recent high humidity. It often indicates a hidden moisture source, like a small AC condensate leak inside the wall or poor ventilation.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a diluted vinegar solution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, if it returns within a week, the moisture source is still active and requires professional diagnosis. Given its location in a closet on an interior wall, a leak from the AC system serving that room is a strong possibility.

Immediate expert inspection is advised if the area is larger, if you smell a persistent musty odor, or if household members experience unexplained respiratory issues. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact water intrusion source without unnecessary demolition. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible mold without fixing the underlying cause is a temporary solution at best.
