Is black mold urgent or can I DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, and now my husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company involved, or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach spray this weekend?

Black mold requires immediate attention, especially with your husband's symptoms. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the confined space of a closet creates an ideal environment for mold growth, which is likely feeding on dust or organic material from stored items. A stuffy nose upon waking is a common reaction to airborne spores circulating from the AC system.

Do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which can feed the mold roots deep in porous surfaces like drywall, and it only bleaches the visible surface without addressing the root colony. It also fails on porous materials and releases harmful fumes in an enclosed space.

For a patch larger than a square foot and with health symptoms present, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—often condensation from an AC supply line running through the wall or a minor leak—and contain the area to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home during cleanup. Remediation involves removing contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation and using specialized antimicrobials on the frame.

Until it's handled, keep the closet door closed, reduce the room's humidity by running the AC continuously, and consider moving the most affected clothing to be professionally cleaned or discarded. A reputable company will provide before-and-after air quality test results from an independent lab to verify the spore count has returned to normal levels.
