How to remove closet mold and prevent humidity buildup?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has started getting small black spots of mold, especially after we run the AC non-stop during the summer. I’m worried it’s spreading to our clothes and might be the reason my allergies have been acting up lately. We’re in a villa in Mirdif and the closet is on the ground floor. What’s the most effective way to clean this mold safely and what can I do to stop the humidity from building up in that specific closet?

The black spots in your closet are likely due to condensation from your AC unit meeting the high humidity, a very common issue in Dubai villas. The constant AC use creates a significant temperature differential between the cool closet interior and the warm outside wall, causing moisture to condense—this is the perfect environment for mold.

For safe cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush the mold, as this releases spores. Instead, use a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Wipe the affected area thoroughly. For porous surfaces like drywall or untreated wood where mold has penetrated, cutting out and replacing the material is often the only permanent solution. After cleaning, allow the area to dry completely. If the infestation covers more than a square meter, or if it returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden growth within the wall cavity.

To prevent humidity buildup, you must address the condensation. First, ensure the closet isn't overcrowded; clothes need air space. Leave a small gap between the back wall and your clothing rack. A renewable desiccant like silica gel can help absorb excess moisture inside the enclosed space. The most effective solution is to improve air circulation. Keep the closet doors open for a few hours each day. If possible, have an HVAC specialist adjust your system to slightly reduce the cooling to that specific room or ensure the vent is not directly blowing cold air onto that wall, which exacerbates condensation.
