Can I clean my moldy AC myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell, and I finally checked the unit in the utility room. There's black and green fuzzy stuff all over the inside of the vent and the surrounding wall. It's been like this for a couple of weeks and I'm worried it's making us all stuffy. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach and a brush, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That damp, earthy smell is a classic sign of microbial growth, likely mold, inside your AC system. The visible fuzz on the vent and wall confirms an active colony, which is almost certainly the cause of the stuffiness you're experiencing.
For a small, visible patch on a non-porous surface like a metal vent cover, a thorough cleaning with a microfiber cloth and a diluted detergent solution can be effective. However, your situation involves the interior of the unit and the wall, indicating a more serious issue. The wall is porous, meaning the mold's root structure (hyphae) has penetrated deep into the material, which surface cleaning cannot address. Using bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can actually feed the root structure while only bleaching the visible surface, making the problem worse. In Dubai's climate, our year-round AC use creates constant condensation, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive. A DIY approach often spreads spores further into the ductwork and living space. For this level of contamination, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They will identify the moisture source, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and use HEPA-filtered equipment to safely remove the colony from both the unit and the building material. Reputable remediation companies here should provide a detailed protocol based on DHA and DM guidelines and can verify the cleanup's effectiveness with post-remediation testing from an independent lab, giving you peace of mind that the issue is resolved. |
