How to safely and permanently remove mold from bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging furniture; the wall feels damp and there are these black and greenish splotches all over the baseboard. This is our villa in Al Barsha and I'm really worried about their health. What's the most effective way to get rid of this safely and permanently so it doesn't come back?

The damp wall and splotches indicate a moisture source, likely a small leak from plumbing or, more commonly in our climate, condensation from an AC line or cold wall meeting humid air. Permanent removal requires fixing that source first; otherwise, it will return.
For the cleanup, isolate the area. Move furniture out and seal the area with plastic sheeting to prevent spores from spreading. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the affected wall with a detergent solution. Avoid bleach; it only lightens the colour and doesn't kill the root structure. After cleaning, dry the area completely within 24-48 hours using dehumidifiers and fans. Given the health symptoms and the extent you've described ("all over the baseboard"), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a moisture meter to find the exact water source hidden in the wall and perform air or swab testing to identify the mold type, which informs the safest removal protocol. In villas, this is often linked to external wall leaks or AC drain pan overflow. To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain line is clear. Maintain indoor humidity below 60% using dehumidifiers, especially during the more humid months. Improving ventilation in the room can also help, but the priority is eliminating the dampness at its source. For a permanent solution, the underlying moisture issue must be professionally diagnosed and repaired. |
