Urgent to get mold inspection in Dubai or clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during the last summer, but with all the humidity lately, it's appeared and has a really damp, earthy smell. How urgent is it to get a professional mold inspection here in Dubai, or can I handle this myself with cleaning first?

The damp, earthy smell indicates active microbial growth, which makes this more urgent than a simple surface stain. Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it was hidden behind boxes, the visible patch is likely just the tip of the iceberg; the underlying wall structure could be affected.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter) that appeared recently, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mixture of detergent and water, scrubbing thoroughly. However, the musty smell suggests the moisture source is deeper, possibly from condensation within the wall or a hidden leak from the AC drain line or plumbing, which is common in villas. DIY cleaning will only remove surface mould, not the root cause.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended here. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact source of the water intrusion behind the wall—something you cannot do yourself. Without identifying and rectifying that source, the mould will return quickly, often within weeks. They can also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and for planning the correct remediation strategy, especially in a bedroom closet where stored items can be affected.
