How to treat closet mold in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get these dark, speckled patches on the back wall, and it smells really damp. We had that period of heavy dew a couple of weeks ago and it's been like this ever since, even though we run the AC constantly. What's the most effective way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and is there a specific type of dehumidifier that works best for closets in our humid climate?

The dark, speckled patches and damp smell in your closet are classic signs of condensation-related mold, very common here after periods of high humidity. The constant AC creates cold surfaces, and when humid air penetrates the closet, it condenses on the cooler walls, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow.

For immediate treatment, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water and scrub the affected area. Vinegar is effective on many common surface molds and helps kill the spores. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can worsen indoor air quality without addressing the root moisture problem. After cleaning, allow the wall to dry completely.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity and improve air circulation. For a closet, a small, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier is ideal—they are silent, require no plumbing, and are very effective in enclosed spaces. Also, try to leave the closet doors open for a few hours each day to allow conditioned air from the room to circulate inside and equalize the temperature, which reduces condensation.

If the patches return quickly after cleaning or cover more than a square foot, the moisture issue is likely deeper within the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to find the hidden source. For villas in Jumeirah, this is a frequent issue that often requires more than a surface clean.
