How to prevent mold in Dubai closet without AC?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting a weird black speckling on my leather bags and shoes. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and I’m worried it’s spreading to our clothes. Besides running the AC non-stop, what’s the most effective way to prevent this mold from coming back every winter?

That black speckling is classic mold growth, and it's a very common issue in Dubai villas, especially on exterior walls during the humid season. The wall itself is likely cold from the AC, causing condensation inside the closet where air doesn't circulate, creating a perfect damp environment for mold.

First, address the current growth. Wipe down all affected non-porous surfaces (walls, shelves) with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. For your leather goods, use a soft cloth with a 50/50 mix of water and rubbing alcohol, then let them dry completely away from the closet. Discard any severely affected porous items like cardboard boxes.

To prevent its return, you need to manage humidity and airflow. Running the AC is the most effective tool, but you can supplement it. A small renewable desiccant dehumidifier, like those containing calcium chloride crystals, placed inside the closet will actively pull moisture from the air. Ensure there's at least a two-inch gap between the wall and your furniture to allow air to move. Leave the closet doors open for a few hours each day to break up the stagnant, humid air pocket.

For a more permanent solution, inspect the exterior wall for cracks or leaks where moisture is infiltrating. Sealing these points is critical. If the problem is widespread or you see extensive growth inside the wall, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the hidden scope and provide remediation options that address the root cause, not just the surface symptom.
