How to remove mold from wall behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and with all the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good without having to call in a super expensive professional company?

Move the wardrobe immediately to assess the full extent and allow the wall to dry. In Dubai, mold behind furniture on an external wall is a classic sign of condensation caused by the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid outside air, creating a perfect breeding ground.

For a small area, a DIY approach can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected wall with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it only removes the color temporarily and doesn't kill the roots. After scrubbing, disinfect with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Let the wall dry completely using a fan before moving furniture back.

The critical step is addressing the moisture source. This is likely chronic condensation. Wipe down external walls regularly to remove moisture buildup and improve air circulation in the room. A dehumidifier can help significantly, especially during the more humid months.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has penetrated deeply into the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is systemic and requires professional assessment. Remediation companies use moisture meters to find the exact source and HEPA vacuums/sprayers to contain and remove growth properly. For rental properties, note that Dubai Law often holds the landlord responsible for resolving structural dampness issues like this.
