AC mold spreading: DIY fix or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’m seeing a patch of black mold spreading on the wall behind the unit. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came back worse. Is this something I can handle myself with a store-bought spray, or should I just call a professional company to assess it and what would that typically cost in Dubai?

A persistent leak behind an AC unit in Dubai's climate creates a perfect environment for mold to root deeply into the wall structure. Vinegar is a surface-level solution and often fails against established growth, which is likely why it returned more aggressively.

For a spreading patch caused by an ongoing leak, a DIY store-bought spray is unlikely to be sufficient. The critical first step is to stop the source of moisture by having an AC technician repair the leak. Until that is fixed, the mold will continue to return. The visible growth on the wall surface is often just a fraction of the colonization inside the wall cavity behind it.

In this scenario, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will identify the full extent of the moisture damage and mold growth, which is essential for proper remediation. The process typically involves controlled removal of affected building materials, specialized cleaning of the area, and applying antimicrobial solutions to prevent recurrence. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide documented evidence that the remediation was successful and the space is safe.

The cost for professional remediation in Dubai is not fixed; it depends entirely on the severity of the infestation and the extent of structural damage found during the inspection. You should request an on-site assessment from a certified provider to get an accurate scope of work and associated cost.
