Is bathroom black mold an urgent weekend fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the bathroom wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been super humid lately and the ventilation isn't great. Is this something I need to deal with immediately over the weekend, or can it wait until I call maintenance next week?

Yes, you should address it this weekend. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in coastal areas like Marina, mold can spread quickly behind walls via condensation. The immediate health risk for most is irritation—congestion, worsened allergies, or asthma symptoms. However, the structural risk is the bigger concern; it can degrade drywall and insulation.
Start by wiping the visible patch with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Wear a mask. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. A dehumidifier or moisture absorber in the room can help significantly. The underlying cause is almost certainly poor ventilation and trapped humidity. Simply cleaning the surface is a temporary fix. For a recurring issue in a rental, document it and request maintenance to assess the ventilation system and check for internal leaks. If the patch is large (over one square foot), returns after cleaning, or you notice a musty smell throughout the apartment, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the species and the full extent of the moisture problem. |
