Safely removing black mold from bedroom wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to clean after the recent humidity. The wall feels damp and the patch is spreading. What’s the safest way to get rid of it myself without putting my family at risk?

Black mold exposure can cause the coughing you're describing, especially in children. The damp wall and spreading patch indicate an ongoing moisture issue, common here after humid periods when condensation gets trapped behind furniture.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the air conditioning vent to prevent spores from circulating. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, but never mix bleach with other cleaners as it can create toxic fumes.

However, DIY removal is a temporary fix if the source of moisture isn't addressed. In Dubai's climate, this dampness is often due to a combination of high humidity and a cold spot on the wall, potentially from a leaking AC condensate pipe inside the wall or insufficient insulation. The mold will almost certainly return without resolving this.

Given the symptoms in your children and the fact the patch is spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden water source. Proper remediation also requires containing the area with negative air pressure and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination, which is nearly impossible to achieve DIY. For health and effectiveness, an assessment is the safest first step.
