Mold on wall in Dubai: call management or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the base of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried it might have started after that really humid spell we had last month. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the building management first or just get a professional mold remediation company myself?

Contact building management first. In Dubai, the responsibility for structural issues like external wall leaks typically falls on them, especially if it's a common area problem. They should send a maintenance team to inspect for water intrusion from outside, which is a common cause in our climate after high humidity.

While waiting, move the sofa away from the wall to improve air circulation. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and spread them. A professional inspection is recommended if management is unresponsive, the affected area is large (over one square meter), or you notice a persistent musty odor. Remediation companies can identify the species and moisture source, which is crucial for a permanent fix. Given Dubai's high humidity and reliance on AC, hidden condensation inside walls is a frequent culprit that requires specialized detection equipment.
