Black bathroom grout returning; DIY or professional mold removal?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it keeps coming back within a week. I think the constant humidity from our showers is making it worse. Should I just keep trying different DIY cleaners, or is this the kind of thing where I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Recurring black grout in a bathroom is a classic sign of a persistent mould colony, not just surface dirt. The high humidity from showers in Dubai creates a perfect environment for it to thrive, especially if the bathroom's ventilation is inadequate. Bleach only bleaches the visible colour and cannot reach the roots (hyphae) growing deep within the porous grout and potentially behind the tiles.

For a problem this persistent, a DIY approach is unlikely to succeed. The issue is systemic, driven by moisture. Continuing to scrub may temporarily remove the surface manifestation, but the underlying colony will keep returning. In many Jumeirah villas and older apartments, this can indicate a more serious moisture issue within the wall cavity, possibly from a tiny leak in the plumbing or waterproofing failure.

A professional inspection is warranted here. They will use moisture meters to locate the source of the dampness, not just treat the symptom. The remediation process for this typically involves specialized antimicrobial treatments to address the root system and may require regrouting or resealing to prevent recurrence. Crucially, they will assess and recommend solutions for your bathroom's ventilation to manage the humidity that caused the problem initially. For a confirmed, recurring mould issue, professional remediation is the most effective long-term solution.
