Dehumidifier or moisture boxes for closet mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell since the humidity really kicked in last month. I finally pulled all our winter clothes and spare bedding out today and found a bunch of black speckles all over a leather handbag and some wool coats. We run the AC constantly but it's clearly not enough for that enclosed space. What's the most effective way to stop this from coming back every summer—should I get a dedicated dehumidifier for the closet, or are those moisture absorber boxes enough?

Moisture absorber boxes are insufficient for a damp closet in a Jumeirah villa. They're designed for small, sealed spaces like a cabinet, not an actively humid room. The damp, earthy smell and visible speckling indicate an active mold problem that requires addressing the root cause.
The most effective solution is a dedicated dehumidifier. For a closet, a compact 10-12L unit is typically adequate. Look for one with a built-in humidistat to automatically maintain humidity below 55%, the level where mold growth is inhibited. Run it continuously during the humid season. This directly tackles the condensation issue that constant AC often can't resolve in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces. However, before you do anything, the existing mold must be properly remediated. Wiping down surfaces is not enough. Professional inspection is recommended for two reasons: first, to identify the species and ensure it's not a hazardous type like Stachybotrys, and second, to locate the moisture source. It could be a small plumbing leak in the wall, condensation from an AC duct running through the space, or simply inadequate room ventilation. A certified inspector can perform air and surface sampling, which is sent to a microbiology lab for definitive identification. After remediation, use the dehumidifier as a preventive measure. Also, leave the closet door ajar occasionally to allow air circulation from the main room, and avoid overpacking items. For valuable items like leather and wool, ensure they are professionally cleaned and completely dry before returning them to the treated space. |
