How urgently should I remove kids' bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell ever since the heavy rains a few weeks ago. I just pulled their dresser away from the wall and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of a dinner plate behind it. With them sleeping in there every night, how urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned?

Given the damp smell and visible growth behind furniture, this situation requires immediate attention. Mold can begin releasing spores within 24-48 hours of a moisture event, and the confined space of a bedroom means your children are breathing that air for extended periods. While not all mold is highly toxic, any active growth can cause significant irritation—worsening allergies, triggering asthma, or causing persistent sinus congestion, especially in children.

The recent heavy rains are a classic trigger here. In Dubai’s climate, high outdoor humidity gets trapped inside air-conditioned homes, leading to condensation on cooler exterior walls. A dresser pushed against that wall creates a dead air space where moisture cannot evaporate, creating the perfect environment for mold. The black and green coloration suggests multiple species may be present.

For a patch that size and given it's in a child's bedroom, professional remediation is strongly advised over a DIY approach. The process involves more than just wiping it away; it requires containing the area to prevent spores from spreading throughout the house, safely removing contaminated materials, and using industrial-grade equipment like HEPA air scrubbers to clean the air. Crucially, the underlying moisture source must be identified and resolved, or the mold will return quickly.

You should arrange for a professional inspection. A reputable company will use a moisture meter to find the dampness source and can take a sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which informs the proper remediation protocol. This is the only way to verify the environment is fully restored to a healthy state. Until then, improve air circulation in the room by moving furniture away from the walls and ensuring the AC is running efficiently, as it is your primary tool for controlling indoor humidity.
