How to safely clean black mold from closet in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making our bedroom closet smell damp, and I just found a patch of black mold on the back wall behind our clothes. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because the humidity has been so high lately. What’s the best way to clean this safely and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that work well in Dubai to stop it from coming back?

First, contain the area. Seal off the bedroom and closet from the rest of the apartment to prevent spores from spreading. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth on porous surfaces like drywall. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover solution or a mixture of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area gently, then dry it completely with a fan. Any moisture left behind will cause it to return. However, the mold on the wall is likely a symptom, not the cause. In Dubai, this is almost always due to condensation from your AC unit. The cold air inside the ductwork meets the humid outdoor air, causing water to form and drip, often saturating the wall behind the unit or in adjacent spaces like closets. Simply cleaning the visible mold won't fix the underlying moisture issue. To stop it from coming back, you must address the humidity and condensation source. A portable dehumidifier can help manage general room humidity, but it may not solve a localized condensation problem from the AC. Moisture absorbers like silica gel packs are useful for small, enclosed spaces like the closet itself. For a permanent solution, the AC system likely needs to be inspected. The drain line may be clogged, the insulation around the cold water pipes might be degraded, or the unit itself could be improperly balanced, causing excessive condensation. This is a very common issue in Dubai's climate. If the mold patch is large, has returned after cleaning, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture entry point and assess any hidden growth within the wall cavity. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to verify the extent of the issue beyond what's visible. |
