Black mold in Dubai bedroom: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It wasn't there during the last cleaning a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it seems to have exploded. What's the best way to handle this ourselves here in Dubai, or should we just call the building management immediately?

For a small patch (under one square foot) that you've just discovered, DIY is reasonable here in Dubai. First, identify and address the moisture source - in a closet, it's often condensation from an exterior wall or AC unit. Check if the wall feels cold or damp. Wipe the mold with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), ensuring proper ventilation by opening windows.
However, given Dubai's high humidity and that this appeared suddenly behind items, the underlying moisture issue might be significant. If the patch is larger than a square foot, has a musty odor, or returns after cleaning, stop and contact your building management immediately. They are responsible for the building's structure and common systems that could be causing this, like a leaking pipe in the wall or inadequate insulation leading to condensation. They should send a technician to investigate the source. If the building management's response is insufficient or the problem persists, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. In many cases here, the root cause is a correctable issue like AC condensate drain line leakage or poor sealing around windows. |
