How to prevent mold in a stuffy bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get small black spots on some of our leather bags and shoes. It's not a huge problem yet, but I'm really worried it's going to spread to our clothes. The room itself feels fine, but the closet just has that damp, stuffy feeling, especially since the weather got hotter and we've had the AC running non-stop. What's the best way to stop this from getting worse and prevent it from coming back every summer?

Closet mold in Dubai is almost always a condensation and humidity issue, not a leak. The constant cycling of your AC creates a temperature differential between the cool room and the warmer, unventilated closet, leading to moisture buildup on walls and your belongings.

First, improve air circulation immediately. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible and consider installing a small battery-operated vent fan or even a quiet USB-powered desk fan inside to move stagnant air. Ensure bedroom furniture isn't pressed tightly against the walls, as this traps moisture.

Second, address the humidity source. Your AC should be set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to reduce extreme condensation. Check that the bedroom's AC vent isn't blowing cold air directly onto the closet door, as this exacerbates the problem. Using a renewable desiccant like silica gel packs inside the closet can help absorb excess moisture passively.

For the current mold, carefully wipe affected non-porous surfaces with a solution of diluted white vinegar. Leather items should be professionally cleaned to prevent damage. If the spotting is widespread or you smell a persistent musty odor, the mold may have spread into the wall lining or behind baseboards. A professional inspection with moisture meters can identify hidden dampness, and air sampling can identify the spore types, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation approach. In many Dubai villas, this seasonal issue is resolved by balancing the AC system and adding targeted ventilation.
