Can i clean mold from AC vents myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold in our villa's AC vents. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a dark, dusty buildup around the vent in the master bedroom, and the air just doesn't feel fresh anymore. Is this something I can clean myself with a bleach solution, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company for a proper inspection?

Cleaning visible mold from vent covers yourself is possible, but it's a surface-level fix that often misses the root cause. In Dubai's climate, the mold you see is frequently a symptom of a larger problem inside the ductwork or AC unit, driven by high humidity and condensation.

For a minor, isolated spot, you can clean the vent cover with a diluted vinegar solution (more effective on porous surfaces than bleach) after wearing a mask and gloves. However, if there's a dusty buildup and a musty smell, the system is likely circulating spores. DIY cleaning can aggravate the issue by dispersing more spores into your living space.

Given the symptoms you describe—coughing kids and a persistent issue—a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use borescopes to inspect deep inside ducts and often recommend air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is critical, as certain types common in AC systems can exacerbate respiratory issues. A proper remediation addresses the contamination at its source and identifies the moisture problem, such as a clogged drain line or insufficient insulation, to prevent immediate recurrence. For health-related concerns, especially with children involved, verification through lab analysis provides the clarity needed to resolve the problem effectively.
