Could black mold behind sofa cause kids' chronic cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I finally pulled out our sofa bed in the living room to change the sheets and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for years and just found this. Could this mold be the reason for their constant coughs and sore throats?

Yes, the black mold behind your sofa is very likely contributing to your children's chronic coughs and sore throats. In Dubai's humid climate, hidden mold growth from AC condensation leaks is a common trigger for persistent respiratory irritation, especially in children.

You should immediately move the sofa away from the wall and avoid disturbing the mold patch, as this can release more spores into the air. For a growth of this size and duration, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact mold species and the full extent of the problem, which often spreads inside wall cavities. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow DM and DHA guidelines for containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination.

Until it's professionally addressed, improve ventilation in the room by opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower and run a dehumidifier if possible. Keep your children out of the area. The chronic nature of their symptoms suggests prolonged exposure, so properly identifying and removing the source is the most critical step for their health.
