Urgent black mold in closet: DIY or professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading quickly behind the walls. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company in here, or is this something I can handle myself with a trip to ACE?

Black mold in a closet during a humid period is a common issue in Dubai, but it requires immediate attention. The urgency depends on the size and location. If the patch is smaller than one square meter and confined to a surface like the wall or closet back panel, a DIY approach may be sufficient. However, your concern about it spreading behind the walls is valid and changes the assessment.

Given the UAE's high humidity and reliance on AC, condensation within walls is a frequent cause of hidden mold growth you cannot see. If the drywall feels soft, damp, or the mold has a musty, penetrating odor, the problem is likely more extensive. In these cases, professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the wall cavity's condition without destructive testing.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials. After cleaning, increase air circulation in the closet and use a desiccant dehumidifier to keep humidity below 60%, which is critical in our climate to prevent its return.

If the mold reappears within a few days, that is a clear sign of an ongoing moisture issue from within the structure. At that point, DIY is not a solution, and a professional remediation company should be engaged to find and fix the source, then properly remove the contaminated materials.
