How to prevent mold in my Jumeirah bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting a black, fuzzy mold on leather bags and shoes. It seems to get much worse a day or two after we run the AC, and I'm constantly having to wipe everything down. What's the most effective way to stop this moisture from building up inside the closet for good?

The black mold in your Jumeirah closet is a classic condensation issue, made worse by Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use. When your AC cools the room, the air inside the closet—especially on an exterior wall—remains warmer and more humid. That moisture then condenses on cooler surfaces like leather, creating the perfect environment for mold.
First, stop the immediate growth. Wipe affected items with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product for leather, then allow them to dry completely away from the closet. Discard any severely damaged items. To prevent recurrence, you must improve air circulation. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible and avoid overpacking it. For a more permanent solution, install louvered or vented closet doors to allow conditioned air to flow through. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber box placed inside the closet can also help significantly. The root cause is likely the temperature differential of that exterior wall. Ensure your AC unit is properly serviced and that its condensate drain line is not blocked, as a malfunctioning unit can exacerbate humidity problems. For a villa, the wall itself may have insufficient insulation, causing it to become a cold surface where moisture condenses. If these measures don't resolve the issue within a few weeks, the problem may be more systemic. In such cases, a professional inspection with thermal imaging can identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion and cold spots. They can then recommend targeted remediation, which may involve improving wall insulation or addressing specific ventilation needs. |
