How to clean black mold and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the bedroom wall meets the ceiling. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I’m worried it’s spreading behind the wardrobe. What’s the most effective way to clean this and who should I call to check if it’s a bigger problem with the building?

Black mold growth in wall-ceiling corners is common here due to our high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small, visible patch (under 1 sqm), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub gently, dry the area thoroughly, and increase ventilation.

However, since it's recurring and you suspect it's spreading behind furniture, this indicates a persistent moisture source. This is beyond a surface cleaning issue. The wall itself may be holding moisture from a small leak or insufficient insulation, creating a larger problem inside the cavity.

For this situation, you need a professional mold inspection to identify the moisture source and the full extent of the growth, including behind the wardrobe. Do not call a general cleaning company. Look for an indoor environmental professional or a company with a certified mold inspector who uses tools like moisture meters and borescopes. They should provide a detailed assessment and can often take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. In Dubai, remediation should align with standards like the IICRC S520 for professional mold removal.
