How to treat black mold in humid master bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has been feeling really humid lately, and I just spotted a few small black patches in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling behind our wardrobe. We run the AC constantly, but with the recent humidity, it feels like it's not enough. What's the most effective way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and should I be looking into a dedicated dehumidifier for the room?

Black mold growth in a humid bedroom is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially during the more humid months when ACs struggle to keep up. The first step is to address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, as trapped air creates a condensation hotspot.

For small patches, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective for surface cleaning. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. However, this only treats the visible growth, not the underlying humidity problem.

Given the climate, a dedicated dehumidifier for that room is a highly effective long-term solution to maintain humidity levels below 50%, which inhibits mold growth. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain line is clear, as a clog can contribute to indoor humidity.

If the area is larger than one square meter, the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify hidden moisture sources and, if needed, perform lab testing to confirm the mold type, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol for a lasting solution.
