Can I remove mold from under my AC myself?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom AC unit has been leaking a little water onto the carpet for a while, but after last week's humidity, I lifted the corner of the rug and found a bunch of black and greenish spots spreading underneath. I’m really worried about my kids sleeping in there. What’s the most effective way to kill this mold for good and can I handle it myself, or do I need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that requires professional remediation, not a DIY project. The combination of persistent AC condensation and Dubai's high humidity has created an ideal environment for significant mold growth, and the fact it's spreading under the carpet indicates a larger, hidden problem.

Attempting to remove it yourself with store-bought sprays is ineffective and hazardous. Disturbing the mold will release a large number of spores into the air your family breathes, particularly in a bedroom. The carpet and its underlay almost certainly need to be removed and disposed of properly. More critically, the subfloor beneath is likely contaminated and requires specialized antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. The root cause—the AC unit's leak—must also be diagnosed and repaired by an HVAC technician; otherwise, the moisture problem will return.

For a situation of this scale with children present, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Reputable mold remediation companies in Dubai will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration equipment to prevent cross-contamination to other parts of your home during the removal process. They should also provide verification, typically through post-remediation testing, that the space has been returned to a safe condition. Addressing the leak and the hidden damage now is the most effective way to ensure the health of your indoor environment.
