How to clean black mold from bathroom grout safely?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed these black spots growing in the grout between the bathroom tiles. It's been super humid lately and the ventilation fan seems weak. What's the most effective way to clean this myself without damaging the grout?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is extremely common due to the high humidity and condensation from constant AC use, which creates a damp environment it thrives in. For surface-level black spots on grout, a DIY approach can be effective.

Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is a mild acid that kills many common mold types without damaging grout like bleach can. Spray it generously onto the affected grout and let it sit for at least an hour. For tougher growth, make a paste using baking soda and a small amount of water, apply it directly to the spots, and scrub gently with an old toothbrush. This abrasive action helps remove the staining without eroding the grout. Always wear gloves and ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.

The most critical step is addressing the source of moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If it seems weak, have it checked or upgraded, as proper ventilation is non-negotiable here. Wipe down wet tiles and shower walls with a squeegee after use to remove standing water.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, appears fuzzy, or has penetrated deep into porous grout, it may be a more persistent species. In such cases, a professional inspection with lab identification is advised to confirm the type and guide appropriate remediation, especially in apartments where cross-contamination is a possibility.
