Is my AC mold making me sick at home?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for a couple of months, and now I’ve found black spots spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. Lately, I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat that goes away when I’m at the office. Is this definitely mold and could it be the reason I’m feeling so unwell only at home?

The symptoms you describe, particularly resolving when you leave home, strongly suggest your indoor environment is the source. In Dubai's climate, AC units that develop leaks create ideal conditions for mold growth—constant moisture combined with organic dust in the system provides both the water and food source. The black spots spreading on the wall are a clear visual indicator of a moisture problem, and it is highly likely to be mold.

The persistent condensation from a leaking AC unit, especially in a bedroom where it runs for long periods, allows mold to thrive. Common species like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, frequently identified in such scenarios here, are known to cause the exact symptoms you're experiencing: morning congestion, sore throat, and general respiratory irritation. This is not just about the unit itself; the moisture has saturated the wall, creating a secondary colony that is now releasing spores into your sleeping area.

You should address this promptly. For a leak and visible growth of this scale, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent, including inside the AC unit and the wall cavity. Remediation involves first fixing the AC leak at its source to stop the moisture, then properly containing and removing the contaminated materials. Simply wiping the wall is insufficient and can aerosolize the spores.

To manage health risks in the meantime, increase ventilation in the room when possible and consider using a dehumidifier. For verification and to identify the specific type of mold, a lab test can provide concrete evidence, which is particularly useful if you need to coordinate with building management for repairs.
