Best way to remove black mold in Dubai's climate?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been spreading along the ceiling in our master bedroom closet here in our Jumeirah apartment. It started as a few small spots after that really humid spell last month, but now it's covering a whole corner and the musty smell is really strong when you open the closet doors. I'm worried it's making us sick, but I'm not sure if I can just scrub it off myself with bleach or if I need to call a professional company to handle it properly. What's the best and safest way to deal with this in our climate?

For a small area under one square meter, you can attempt removal yourself using a solution of detergent and water, scrubbing thoroughly and ensuring the area dries completely. However, bleach is not recommended; it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the moisture problem or the root of the mold.

Given the description of a spreading patch with a strong musty odor in a closet, this is a significant growth. In Dubai’s high humidity, mold can regrow quickly if the underlying moisture source isn't identified and resolved. The persistent cough in your children is a strong indicator that professional assessment is warranted.

The safest approach is to engage a certified mold inspector. They will identify the species—confirming if it is the more problematic Stachybotrys chartarum or another common type—and use moisture meters to locate the source of water, which is often condensation from AC ducts in the ceiling or a small leak. DIY attempts can disturb the mold, releasing a high concentration of spores into your living space and potentially worsening respiratory symptoms.

Following Dubai Municipality and DHA guidelines, remediation for this scale typically requires containment of the area, use of HEPA vacuums, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure it is properly addressed. After remediation, a post-test verification is crucial to confirm the environment is safe. Addressing the root cause, such as improving ventilation or fixing AC condensation issues, is the only way to prevent its return in our climate.
