Is black mold removal urgent or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it looks like it's been growing for a while, probably from all the humidity. How urgently do I need to get this professionally removed, or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach spray this weekend?

Black mold removal should be treated with urgency, especially with children showing symptoms. The UAE's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture and in walls where condensation accumulates.

For a small, visible patch (less than one square foot), a thorough DIY approach may be sufficient. However, given the location behind a wardrobe and the likelihood of hidden growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent within wall cavities, which is a common issue here. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or the mold's structure. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of white vinegar and water, scrubbing the area thoroughly.

The critical step is identifying and eliminating the moisture source, which could be a small plumbing leak, condensation from an AC vent, or humidity from an exterior wall. Without solving this, mold will return quickly. Due to the health symptoms and potential for widespread hidden growth, seeking a professional assessment from a company with its own microbiology lab is the most prudent course. They can provide verified identification and ensure remediation is complete.
