Best dehumidifier for a moldy closet in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started getting black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there, and everything feels damp. This started about a month ago when the weather got really humid, and even though I run the AC constantly, it doesn't seem to help that enclosed space. What’s the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get to specifically protect my closet and stop this mold from coming back?

The black spots and dampness in your closet are classic signs of condensation and mold growth, a very common issue in Jumeirah apartments during humid months. The enclosed space lacks the air circulation from your AC, allowing moisture to settle on cooler surfaces like leather.

For a closet, a compact electric dehumidifier with a built-in humidistat is most effective, as it automatically shuts off when the target humidity level (ideally below 60%) is reached. Look for a model with a capacity suitable for a small room. Alternatively, large-capacity disposable or renewable silica gel desiccant boxes can work well for enclosed spaces; place one on the floor and another on a high shelf.

However, these are containment solutions. The moisture is likely entering from the apartment's ambient air or could be due to a hidden leak in the wall. For leather goods already affected, professional mold remediation is advised, as DIY cleaning can drive spores deeper into the material. A certified inspection can identify the moisture source—whether it's simply high humidity or a more serious issue like a breach in the building envelope—and provide a targeted remediation plan to prevent recurrence.
