Mold in AC and on walls: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing a musty smell, and now I’m seeing black spots on the wall behind my bedroom wardrobe. It’s been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach spray, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company, and roughly how much would that cost for a single room?

That musty smell and black spots are classic signs of a mold issue, very common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. Bleach spray is a temporary fix at best; it only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the mold roots or address the moisture source. For a small, visible patch (less than one square meter), you can try scrubbing with a dedicated mold remover, but the wall behind the wardrobe and the AC system suggest a more systemic problem.

In Dubai, the real concern is your air conditioning unit. The smell indicates microbial growth inside the ductwork or evaporator coil, which will continue to spread spores throughout your apartment. A professional inspection is strongly recommended because they can use borescopes to see inside the AC and moisture meters to find hidden dampness in walls that you can't see. Remediation cost isn't fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the infestation within the walls and AC system. You'll need to request an assessment for an accurate scope of work and associated cost. Proper remediation should always include identifying and fixing the moisture source, such as a clogged AC drain line or condensation issue, to prevent it from returning quickly.
