Could mold behind bed cause kids' cough and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I finally pulled their bed away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold hidden behind it, probably from the AC condensation leak we had a while back. Could this be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and headaches?

Yes, the mold behind the bed is very likely the cause of your children's persistent cough and headaches. The fuzzy black growth indicates active mold, which releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air. In a confined space like a bedroom, these are inhaled all night, commonly causing respiratory irritation, congestion, headaches, and worsened allergy symptoms.

In Dubai's climate, this scenario is unfortunately common. The high humidity, combined with cold surfaces from constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for condensation. A past leak from an AC unit, often from a clogged drain line, provides the moisture needed for mold to thrive hidden behind furniture.

For any black mold patch larger than one square meter, Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend assessment and remediation by a professional company. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive cloud of spores. The first step is to identify and fix the moisture source—likely the AC leak. A professional inspection can confirm the mold type through lab testing and safely contain the area during removal to prevent cross-contamination.

Until it is professionally addressed, keep the children out of the room, improve ventilation by opening windows when outdoor humidity is lowest (typically early morning), and run a dehumidifier. Their symptoms should improve once the exposure stops, but a visit to a pediatrician is also advisable to discuss the mold exposure.
