How to clean black mold in shower corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think the bathroom’s exhaust fan isn’t powerful enough. What’s the most effective way to clean this ourselves, and is this something I should report to my building management?

For a small patch of black mold in a shower corner, you can often manage it yourself. The key is addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture issue that caused it.
Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. For tougher growth, a small amount of chlorine bleach (no more than 1 cup per gallon of water) can be used, but ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated and you are wearing gloves and a mask. Spray the affected area thoroughly and let the solution sit for at least an hour to penetrate the mold. Then, scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, rinse with clean water, and dry it completely with a towel. In Dubai's climate, especially during humid summer months, bathroom exhaust fans are critical but often underpowered. After every shower, run the fan for at least 30 minutes to remove steam. Wiping down wet walls and leaving the bathroom door open also helps reduce humidity. If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, it indicates a persistent moisture problem. You should report this to your building management in Marina. The issue may extend beyond your unit, potentially involving inadequate ventilation systems for the building or a leak from a common pipe chase. Dubai landlords and building owners are generally responsible for maintaining the property's structure and essential systems, which includes functional ventilation. Requesting they assess or upgrade the exhaust fan is a reasonable step. If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter) or you experience health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the species and the full extent of the moisture source. |
