How to remove mold from wall behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind my wardrobe in the bedroom has started showing these black and greenish spots, and I’m sure it’s mold. It’s been extra humid lately and I think it might be from a slow leak in the AC condensation pipe. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I just call a professional company right away?

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself. First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to fully expose the area and improve air circulation. The root cause is almost certainly the humidity and a potential AC condensate leak, which is common here due to year-round AC use. Fixing that leak is your absolute first priority; otherwise, the mold will return.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted bleach solution (never mix chemicals), and scrub the affected area. Let it dry completely. However, DIY cleaning only addresses surface mold you can see; it cannot remediate the spores within the wall or the hidden moisture source.

Given the location behind furniture and the UAE's high humidity, this situation often requires professional assessment. The mold has likely penetrated the drywall or plasterboard. Professionals use moisture meters to find the full extent of the water damage and HEPA vacuants and sanders to properly remove contaminated materials. They can also identify the specific species, which is important for understanding any health risks. For anything beyond a very small, superficial spot, calling a company with the equipment for proper containment and removal is the most effective way to ensure it is resolved and doesn't recur.
