How to permanently remove black shower grout mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning dark grey and black, especially in the corners. It’s been like this for a couple of months and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just seems to come back within a week. I run the exhaust fan during and after showers, but the humidity here is just relentless. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this for good and prevent it from returning in our Dubai bathroom?

Black shower grout discoloration in Dubai is almost always a moisture issue, exacerbated by the high ambient humidity. While often called "black mold," the dark color can be from various fungi, including Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger, which are common here due to condensation from constant AC use and hot showers.

Bleach is a surface-level fix that fails on porous grout. The water component carries the mold's hyphae (roots) deeper into the material, so it reliably grows back. A more effective DIY approach is to use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach. For lasting results, the grout must be completely dry before application—use a hairdryer on a cool setting to achieve this.

However, if the discoloration penetrates deeply or returns quickly after proper cleaning, the moisture source is likely behind the tiles. In many Dubai bathrooms, the waterproofing membrane behind the tiling can fail, creating a permanent damp environment no amount of surface cleaning can address.

The most effective long-term solution is grout removal and replacement. This allows a professional to inspect the substrate for damage and ensure proper waterproofing is reinstated before new, high-quality fungicide-infused grout is applied. For persistent cases, a professional inspection using a moisture meter can identify hidden leaks or condensation issues within the wall cavity that are invisible to the naked eye.
