Is shower mold causing our coughing and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve been getting awful headaches every time I shower. I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around our Deira apartment's shower and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. I’m really worried this is what’s making us sick. How dangerous is this type of mold and should I be taking my family to a doctor right away?

Yes, the mold you found is very likely contributing to your family's symptoms. Black, fuzzy mold growing behind silicone sealant is a common but serious issue in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and constant condensation. When disturbed during showers, it releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are then inhaled. This can directly cause the persistent coughing and headaches you're experiencing, especially in children.
You should consult a doctor to discuss these specific symptoms and potential mold exposure. They can advise on any supportive care needed. For the mold itself, surface cleaning is not enough. The growth under the sealant indicates a deeper moisture problem. The sealant must be completely removed, the area underneath thoroughly cleaned and dried, and new sealant properly applied to prevent rapid regrowth. In severe cases like this, where occupants are already experiencing health effects, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the full extent of the growth, identify the species (as some types are more problematic than others), and ensure remediation is done correctly to halt the spore release. Given Dubai's climate, this problem will recur without addressing the root cause of the moisture and ensuring a complete removal. |
