Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY or professinal help?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during the last summer, but with all the humidity lately, it’s really taken off. I’m worried about it spreading to our clothes and affecting our health. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I tackle it myself this weekend?

The size and location determine if this is a DIY job. For a patch smaller than one square foot (about the size of a standard A4 paper) on a non-porous surface like painted drywall, you can likely handle it yourself. In Dubai's high humidity, the root cause is almost always excess moisture, so simply wiping it away won't prevent its return.

Before cleaning, identify the moisture source. In an Al Barsha villa closet, it's often condensation from an adjacent external wall or a small AC duct leak dampening the insulation. Move storage boxes away from walls to improve air circulation. For DIY, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then dry it thoroughly. Avoid using bleach, as it can damage surfaces and doesn't prevent regrowth.

If the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall or insulation, or you detect a musty odor throughout the room, professional assessment is recommended. Remediation involves containing the area to prevent spores from spreading, removing contaminated porous materials, and using industrial HEPA air scrubbers. For health safety, especially with infants or anyone with respiratory issues, a professional with a microbiology lab can identify the mold species to confirm the risk level. The key is fixing the moisture issue first; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of how well you clean.
